Ag marketing terms, let’s all get on the same page!

We all know that words are powerful, more powerful than a sword as one old saying goes. Yum has been working in the sustainability arena for around eight years now and always notices that in order for a group of people to make real progress, there must be a common vocabulary. It is too easy to get hung up on semantics and miss opportunities to create policy, programming, or whatever the task on hand happens to be.

Most  people know that the point of marketing is to sell, sell, sell. Yum is an ag marketer and a consumer and finds the way words are sometimes used to sell products can be frustratingly misleading, meaningless and even dishonest.

There is so much at stake when we talk about our food system: health, nutrition, cultural celebrations. This makes it so  important to understand the meaning behind what is being said in our collective discussions about food, no matter if the focus is on production, consumption, distribution or safety. Food at least can nourishes us and at best cause us to be happy to be alive. It also brings together such a cross of professionals who may not talk in normal day to day life such as farmers, educators, chefs, politicians, homemakers, etc..

Yum’s public service announcement for the day is to offer up this list of ag marketing terms to help us all get on the same page AND get down to the real work that needs to be done! The above link will open a new page and take you to the excellent White Dog Cafe Foundation / Fair Food Philadelphia website.
